What are the symptoms of asbestosis?

Exposure to asbestos is the cause of the pulmonary disease asbestosis. A person may develop this illness due to extended exposure to the material or even from a single intense contact.

Asbestosis is difficult to detect as the symptoms typically don’t show until many years or decades and that when usually signs of an impaired upper respiratory functionality occur. All asbestos induced diseases are caused by inhalation or ingestion of very small toxic dust fibers, causing inflammations and over time result in the formation of scar tissue which starts to grow progressively.  This occurrence prevents the lungs from expanding and contracting properly and the patient starts to exhibits the first symptoms of asbestosis. The aforementioned scarring may cause some asbestosis patients difficulties to breathe normally. Breathing can get painful and is frequently accompanied by persistent dry coughing.

The syptoms of asbestosis can be deceiving as they resemble the ones of other diseases. As mentioned earlier until a conclusive asbestosis diagnosis can be made, the disease has often already progressed to an advanced stage. A cure for asbestosis is yet to be found. A surgical procedure might be necessary in some cases with the goal to remove as scarring tissue as much as possible. However, this approach is heavily debated and opponents argue that this rather invasive procedure has only very limited benefits and therefore doesn’t outweigh the risks involved.

Very often the disease will just be closely monitored. It is needless to point out that smoking is extremely detrimental to the situation. A healthy lifestyle with a healthy nutrition can help the body to deal with the situation better.

Most importantly: if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos at some point, it is certainly worthwhile to have your lungs checked by a specialized health care professional. If you encounter any of the symptoms mentioned earlier, don’t waste any time but make an appointment with your physician immediately.
