Summerizing Above Ground Pools
The very first thing to remember before even thinking about summerizing your above ground pool is properly maintaining it during the winter months. Doing this makes the opening of your pool for the summer season so much easier. Following these steps will make for a great beginning to a fun summer. First, remove any standing water, dirt, or debris from the winter cover. Then, remove the cover and clean it, allowing it to dry to prevent mildew. Take off any pool cover pumps. Then, check out the chemicals you presently have, and check expiration dates. Replace any that have expired. You will then need to put the pump, the filter, and anything else you took off back together. Now it is time to fill the pool back up. Fill it to its normal level. Once it’s filled you can turn it on to circulate and clean the pool.
If your water is green don’t panic. I have had green pools and it may take some time, but you will eventually have a clear pool. You will need to pick up any debris that is on the floor of the pool. Use a large leaf net so you can stir up the debris. Don’t vacuum if you can’t see the bottom. You will need to adjust the Alkalinity and pH levels. You will also need to shock the pool quite a few times. Go to your favorite pool store and ask the pool service department for their advice on what brands to use. They usually know best.
You will need to check the chemical levels frequently during the first several days and continue to run the circulating system for the next 72 hours. If the pool is dirty, you will need to backwash frequently. Finally, look around for any leaks. The best thing you could do for your pool is to look at your swimming pool’s manuals to see what they recommend. Covering up your pool properly in the fall will make for an easier summer pool opening.
