New to Cooking Quinoa? A Few Ideas to Get You Started

Quinoa may be a food that you have never tried.  Most people in the United States did not eat quinoa when we were young.  You may not know how to get started cooking with quinoa.  Thankfully, quinoa is extremely versatile and can be prepared in many ways.  Quinoa recipes are very easy to find these days in cookbooks, magazines and on the internet.  Here are a few ideas to get you started.

If getting your children to eat healthier is a struggle for you, you may try adding quinoa to their diet!  While some children hate to try new foods, most love the taste and texture of quinoa.  A great way to get resistant children started eating quinoa is to add it into meatballs.  Just substitute quinoa for breadcrumbs in your favorite recipe.  If you do not have one, try mine.  Start by cooking your quinoa.  Then mix it with extra lean ground beef, goat cheese, fresh parsley, ground flax, salt and pepper.  Once everything is combined in a large bowel you can form your meatballs.  Bake them for 10 minutes at 400 degrees.

If you enjoy soup, add some quinoa to help you stay full longer.  My favorite soup with quinoa is minestrone.  Simply combine white kidney beans, tomatoes, water, carrots, fennel, thyme, bay leaves, garlic and onion and bring to a simmer.  Add in quinoa and allow to cook for 20 minutes.  You can even add in some chopped spinach towards the end of cooking for an added nutritional punch.

Quinoa is just as great for breakfast as it is at other times of the day.  Instead of just oatmeal, try mixing quinoa and oatmeal.  Just top with some fresh berries and agave nectar and you have a great breakfast.  This is just a start at looking at the many ways that you can enjoy quinoa.  Be creative!  There are many ways to make quinoa salad or you can try adding it into your stir fry recipes.
