Keep These Things in Mind When Making Hummus

If you are interested in following a healthy diet, hummus is a great food to have on hand.  Because it is full of both protein and fiber, it can help to keep hunger at bay without adding empty calories to your diet.  It is great both as a snack and as a sandwich spread.  Think of all the calories that you can save by skipping the mayonnaise!

Just about anyone can make hummus recipes at home.  Even though it can take a little time, it is definitely worth the effort. When you buy hummus at the store, it does not taste that great most of the time and typically does not have the same quality of flavor that you can get at home.  In addition to this, it is overpriced most of the time.

There are a few things that you will want to keep in mind if you would like to make hummus at home.  It is always best if you start with dried garbanzo beans.  Even though using canned beans saves time and does not require advanced planning, you should go with dried beans for two reasons.  The first reason is that canned foods may actually be harmful to your health.  Cans are loaded with a harmful toxin called BPA which leaches into your food.  In early 2010, the Federal Drug Administration issued a statement in which they expressed their concern about the safety of BPA.  Since that time, whenever I am making hummus or black bean recipes, I always start with dried beans.

The other reason why you should used dried garbanzo beans is that it is always best to start with soft and warm garbanzo beans. This really improves the flavor of your hummus, because it helps everything to blend and cuts down on the acidity from the garlic.
