Is surgery the best option to remove stretch marks

Removal of stretch marks is often viewed to be a painful and strenuous exercise. From dieting to creams, people resort to various methods for getting rid of these marks. Stretch mark removal surgery, latest advancement in removal of stretch marks, is an FDA approved procedure for getting rid of these marks almost instantaneously. The surgery is performed by most cosmetic surgeons across the country.

The procedure involves the use of a beam of light for removal of a thin layer of patient’s skin, around the affected area. A high energy UV light is used to destruct this tissue by a process called ablation. This causes absolutely no damage to the surrounding skin. Once the laser procedure is complete, the skin around the destructed tissue will heal over a period of time, forming a clear layer of new skin.  While most patients heal within a few days, some require a few weeks with more extensive therapy to get through. The surgery also causes a sensation of blistering around the operated area while new skin is forming.

Although the success of stretch mark removal surgery is dependent on age of the patient and prevalence of the marks, the surgery has been proved to be very effective in most cases. Other advantages of this procedure are its low risk, high effectiveness and safety. The laser is controlled very precisely with no chances of causing any injury to the patient. It is also less invasive than other cosmetic surgeries.

The main disadvantage of this method is its high operation costs. Per session treatment can cost between $400 and $1500. Since it is a cosmetic procedure, it is not covered under health insurance. The operation can be risky as the laser, if mishandled, can cause damage to some of the superficial tissue. Also, if the marks are very prominent, they might not be removed completely. Blistering and other post operation infections can emerge but they are temporary and not very risky.
