Between the stairs, which are a work of art in themselves and the kitchen is a glass floor. The floor allows plenty of light to percolate through to their library alcove immediately below. The design is worth mentioning: two full layers of toughened glass were fastened together to make the balustrade and the supporting beam. Thick laminated oak treads were incorporated around the vertical faces and the edge so that they formed a match for the oak parquet floors.

The exterior of the house is extremely satisfying from an architectural point of view. The green oak frames and beam structures are sufficiently heat retentive to allow the Smiths to not use additional heating since the beginning of spring. Environmentally, the house has good credentials, too. The green roof attracts birds and other animals; the kitchen worktops are made of glass that has been recycled; the heat-store boiler, hot water tank, wood burning stove and solar panels produce a combined twenty percent of renewable energy.
