All About the Blues Music

Blues is an African-American music genre and musical form that emerged in the Southern United States sometime in the late 19th century. It is defined by the use of notes lower than the major scale called the “blues notes.” Originally, blues music was used to convey spirituality, work, narrative love songs and sadness. Blues has continued to thrive today, and has successfully blended itself with other musical styles.

The blues, which implies sadness, originally came from the musical genius of the African people. It found its way across the seas to America by way of the transatlantic slave trade when enslaved African natives continued the musical tradition of their native land despite the new world that they had been in. After countless years, and as the slavery was abolished, the blues evolved as new forms of accompaniment and themes were injected. It is most commonly described as having a 12-bar structure where three sets of four notes create a specific melody of the song. The blues notes that characterize the music of a blues composition are the flat versions of the 3rd, 5th and 7th notes on the song’s major scale.

The blues music evolved during the time that the American music industry was starting to develop. The blues music which was among the early recordings ushered by the American music industry became a popular choice, bringing obscure blues musicians to the American national stage.

Flexible as they are, the blues further evolved with the development of modern music and new instrumentation. Blues musicians continued to express their music with accompaniment from contemporary instruments such as the electric guitar and electric bass guitar, while slowly opening itself up to welcome fusion from rock and roll.
