A Short Biography of Vera Wang
If you are a celebrity, or if you can simply afford it, getting yourself a Vera Wang wedding dress will probably be your first choice. It is almost unbelievable that such a popular creator of wedding gowns, perfumes, costumes, and many other things, actually never went to a class of design. She actually majored in History.
Vera Wang comes from a family of Chinese emigrants, who moved to the States in the 1940s, away from Communist Revolution. Although fashion has always been in her mind, Vera’s first passion was sport, figure skating in particular, and she was very good at it. After a fifth place at the U.S. Championships, a career as a professional skater became one of her options, but when a decision had to be taken, Vera chose fashion.
Everything started with a job as in an YSL in Manhattan, where she had the chance to meet people of the industry. The next step was a job offer at fashion magazine Vogue. Vera at that time already wanted to be a designer, but also knew that, due to her completely different background, she first had to get to know the industry from within. She accepted the job, and over a very short period of time she steadily climbed all the steps. By the age of 25, she already was senior fashion editor.
She worked for the magazine until 1985, when she left for Ralph Lauren. That was her first important job as fashion designer, but Vera’s creative drive and desire for success was too strong, so she started to work on her own dresses.
Collection after collection, Vera became more and more popular in the fashion industry.
Vera had already opened her first boutique in 1990, but her real breakthrough arrived four years later. She crossed paths with figure skating again, and was given the opportunity to design the costume of one of the American skaters. Fast forward to 2004, when one of her wedding dressed was featured in the chick flick movie Sex And The City.
Vera’s creativity has also expanded to fashion’s sister industry and now Vera Wang perfume line is rapidly expanding. Vera Wang Princess perfume is the best selling fragrance, targeting the younger female population, the brides-to-be.
